IMPORTANT SAFETY SERVICE!!!
IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO ALL OWNERS AND USERS OF MARINE VHF RADIOS
To operate your VHF radio you MUST hold a VHF Operators Qualification. Legally you must hold this qualification in order to use a Marine VHF Radio (an exception is made for radio use only in cases of genuine emergency or distress). To find out how to obtain this simple qualification, call Coastguard Boating Education Service (CBES) on 09 489 1850 if within Auckland, or 0800 40 80 90, contact Ian at Wanaka Marine- or click on the link! www.cbes.org.nz
Wanaka Marine provide the only local VHF training programme so that you can become a legal operator. These are held for groups of ten individuals or more or in special circumstances, smaller groups will be catered for.
Legally all radio transmissions are required to be "individually identifiable". All countries throughout the world have adopted the call sign system as being the best option available.
Call signs are held on a national database and are used solely for Search and Rescue purposes.
VHF Call signs for recreational and commercial boaties are available from CBES who maintain the database on behalf of the Radio Spectrum division of the Ministry of Economic Affairs.
There is a charge of $30.00 (renewable every 5 years). To obtain your call sign simply phone CBES on 0900 54332. The charge is then automatically debited to your telephone account.
Should any of your personal details change or if you change vessels you must advise CBES of these amendments. Call 09 489 1850 or 0800 40 80 90 to update.
Before you go out on the water it's essential to know that you will be safe - at Wanaka Marine we stock all of the necessary safety equipment and are happy to provide instruction on its proper use - the following are merely some examples of the equipment we can provide - our stock list is far more extensive.
